I agree with much of what you said here, but people are too stuck on the "comparison", and I don't think Obama concerned himself with the trial - I think he concerned himself with the people who are seriously upset because they don't understand the outcome. People who are demonstrating and protesting - actions that seem serious enough that we'd expect the president to speak up. I disagree with you that this isn't the time to possibly start the race discourse, given that it is very much at the forefront. Obama basically said that we need to start looking at how we are going to handle the discussion, and I agree with that.

Of course, I have the luck not to have been in the states for all of the drama, so it may all hit me differently.

Well, I don't feel attacked, but even if I did absolutely nothing to support social justice, arguing against the attitudes I see in this post should count for something. If anything, I hope I managed to make people think. Just to satisfy my curiosity though, what kind of things do you do?
