Where they refer to anyone who committed suicide as "an hero" as a way of mocking the exact same mindset you're talking about.

But ultimately I agree with both of you. While I think suicide is very tragic, it's neither brave nor heroic. We should be able to grieve for those who take their lives without deluding ourselves that their actions somehow made them "better" than they were before.
