I'm not sure how this is even a debate. Legolas Send a noteboard - 18/11/2015 08:00:47 PM

View original postBut despite the heavy efforts to make this an Iraqi problem and thus a Bush problem the group built its number and strength in Syria and moved from there into Iraq. Not surprising many of it's members fought in Iraq but to say ISIS grew out of the unrest in Iraq is nothing more than believing in fairytales because you like the story.

Of course you can keep tracing things back infinitely, but what's clear is that at one point there was Al Qaeda in Iraq, which merged into Islamic State of Iraq, which then became Islamic State of Iraq and Syria only in 2013. Al-Baghdadi, as you can guess from the name, is an Iraqi and led an Iraqi group until 2013. Certainly, he was also indirectly involved in Syria after the outbreak of the civil war in 2011 - but mostly through Jabhat al-Nusra, which as you know is now very much independent from, and hostile to, ISIS after the failed attempt to absorb them in 2013.

If you're talking only about holding territory, then you are partially right as they first held a little territory in Syria in the course of 2013, but before long also in their homeland Iraq.
