Turkey also has a large population, and thus a large amount of money it can bring into the EU. Turkey is also situated quite close to the Middle-East, so would also provide a viable platform for future peace-keeping and humanitarian aid to the region (probably not military support though).

As you say, it's all dependant on if Turkey can get its house in order, sort out the Kurdish situation peacefully and stop sending its army to the border with Kurdish Iraq and rattling sabres every once in a while.
