Yeah, how dare they give some Arab loser a space to publish an op-ed! Commie bastards! Legolas Send a noteboard - 03/05/2017 06:15:54 PM

Seriously, though, while I will readily admit to being irked sometimes by the Guardian's tone or editorial stances, this is absurd. If you react like this - subject line and three quarters of your post ranting about the Guardian, only one paragraph discussing the topic at hand - to an op-ed that just so happens to be published in a newspaper you don't like, you maybe need to consider cooling off a little.

As I said to AA, while you of course have every right to rip into the actual author of the piece if you think he writes nonsense, ranting about the Guardian makes no sense when I'm the one who showed you the piece.

View original postAt a practical level, talking to anyone makes sense if there is a chance that it will lead to progress in solving a problem. However, let's just be honest here for a moment: there is no solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict at this point. Hamas could change its charter 20 times, or just change it in a week to say, "We recognize Israel, we love Israel, Israel and the Jews are the best," but the trust level is SO LOW that no one will take them at their word. No one will do that now. I doubt Hamas trusts Israel enough to take steps to build any lasting peace. There is an admission on their part that Israel can hurt them more than they can hurt Israel, but I doubt there's much that will come of it.

One doesn't have to take them at their word to negotiate with them. Look at Northern Ireland - even a limited amount of mutual trust can take a long time to build, and can very easily vanish again. But the current situation wasn't moving at all, so you'll forgive me if I'm positive about one side taking a public step towards peace. I believe we've already established I'm generally a more optimistic person than you are...
