elect the leader at least. And even then I would not be happy with that. This is one of the reasons the Australians rejected the referendum to become a Republic. The President would have been elected by the Senate not by the public. People want to elect leaders directly.


Or at least not for the foreseeable future, and not unless Europe gets much more of a shared public opinion and public debate than it has now - which if it's up to the Brits and some others will certainly not happen. As I said, electing such a leader would be an interesting experiment, but by "interesting" I mean completely unpredictable and liable to yield some rather random results, or a sad spectable with dozens of candidates all failing to reach any significant amount of votes, and most of their votes coming from their own country. I guess you could do primaries per party, but that too would require much stronger European parties than the current ones are, to have any success.
