I agree, and while I don't think hate crime legislation is a big deal it makes no sense to me that
we have hate crimes laws for
Perceived Race
Perceived Color
Perceived Religion
Perceived National Origin
but not
Perceived Disability (the matthew shepard act added hate crimes for disabilities)
Perceived Sexual Orientation
Perceived Gender Identity
In my mind you have to be for the first four as well as the last three, or against all of them. It is very hard to argue for the first four without arguing for the last three, and the public as a whole does support the idea of hate crimes in theory.
