this feels like the church telling people that abstinence is the only way to avoid the spread of AIDS. When you know people aren't going to follow the rules, some sort of prevention seems like a good idea, no?

Your school is basically pretending that bad things don't happen (AND that death is inherently bad), when 99% of those kids have certainly seen movies with death and have played games where they kill people. Imo, it hurts the credibility of the school.
