My dad's father died when my dad was about four, and when my grandmother remarried, her husband adopted my dad and changed his last name. My dad has two siblings from the latter marriage as well. Never had any sorts of problems with his biological grandparents - actually we're closer to them than we are to his immediate family, but that's a long story.
