true. But I think at this point we are getting away from commercially raised and more towards pets. Avendesora Send a noteboard - 10/11/2009 02:29:01 PM
when was the last time you fed a dog a haunch of venison or a cat a nice juicy raw pheasant?

When we ate venison, so did the dog. The cat actually caught a grouse last year, and loves rabbits. We don't have a cat or the dog anymore. He died a little bit ago. But yes, we fed them kibble a lot. I see your point.

Alfalfa and Brome pastures do not exist in nature.
No they don't. The cows I seak of eat grass and clover and ... whatever other stuff they decide to gobble up that's in the field. The winter is another story, but they have natural pasture as much as they can.

Out of curiosity, do your local meat producers meet your standards of care? No feed lot cattle, pigs weren't raised with grain, chickens housed in the front yard?
Yes they do. I have never seen a feed lot, other than in movies. When I get my eggs, there is a sign that says "beware of attack rooster", and the border of the chicken fence is about ten feet from the porch, visible from the driveway. They all hang with the ducks and geese. I don't know how many birds she has, but there is about 3 or 4 acres of land for the birds. Whenever I drive up, they are scattered with about... 20-ft circle between them. You grab a dozen out of the fridge and drop the money in the bucket she has. You can make your own change. She charges $4.00/dozen, so I try to get them other places when I can. Another woman I get my eggs from ($2.00/dozen), you have to literally honk your horn as your drive in so you don't run over a bird hiding behind a hedge. The woman I'm getting the turkey from raises mostly beef and broiler hens, as well as eggs. When I go to pick up my turkey this weekend I'll take a photo. Maybe she has a blog, I'll check it out.

I don't see why anyone doesn't grow turkeys free range...freaking bastards would come at me in an enclosed space and I wouldn't be able to get away... Turkeys are out to get me.
Turkeys are funny as hell. They don't call them bird brains for nothing. Geese are nastier though. One backed my husband into a chicken house when he was a kid. He had to fight his way out with broom. That one made a nice christmas dinner. :D

Can we feed the masses this way? No. I get that. I just choose to have it this way. And I don't blame or scorn others for eating it, or the farmers who raise them. But the politicans and policy-makers on the other hand...
