Respect for what? Why should I respect an unelected head of state whose ancestors were violent enough to keep hold of power? What has the unelected head of state ever done to deserve a bow? And we are talking about unelected heads of state in this post.

If the other person is bowing also, at the exact same angle, then I can see it as a greeting. Like a handshake. But ultimately a bow's origin is about respect for a hierarchical position. Sorry, not buying into that. Don't consider it about respect either. I consider it a holdover from more barbaric time periods.
And it doesnt mean that you see that person as more highranked than yourself. Too be honest I look down on quite a lot of the people I curtsey to, but still, if I dont take the first step to be polite to them I lower myself to their level. Which is a very funny reason to show respect, I admit. Still everyone deserves respect until they activly proved themselves unworthy.
