The asking for money is where I'd have to draw the line, I guess. Legolas Send a noteboard - 26/01/2010 03:23:44 PM
I have a friend who has not worked in over year after being let go with about 20 other people. Where we live the job market for what he (data analyst) is barren. In the past 12 months I have told him about 4 different openings where I work as a line foreman manufacturing different kinds of shelving.

The positions would be entry level, not great pay but it would put some money in his pocket and help put food on the table for him. He acts like a job where he can't sit on his ass all day is beneath him. So when he asked last night for $400 to help out, I said no. I am sorry, but I have no sympathy for someone who can work but will not work even at something they think they are too good for. Now on to the question.

If you needed to make money to pay your bills and were out of a job, are there employment options out there that you would turn down just because you think you are better than the job?

There are definitely employment options I would turn down when unemployed - like Jens said, one doesn't get a university degree to sweep streets, and as someone else said, having such a job you're way overqualified for makes it harder to keep looking for better-suited jobs. I wouldn't have a problem with collecting unemployment benefits during such a period, either. But I do agree as a matter of principle that such benefits should be limited in time, or at least should decrease with time, and so if after a long enough period of time I still hadn't found any more suitable jobs, and got to a point where I'd have to ask friends for money, yeah, at that point any job that you're at all capable of doing will do. And it is fairly rude to ask you money when you've actually gone out of your way to offer him jobs several times and he refused them all, that's for sure.
