It has been shown that taking a job below your earnings will set you back for the rest of your life. You will never make up the pay difference. So from a macro-economic POV he's actually right. You know, on a grander scale.

Problem is: he's not an abstract ecomomic subject where we can calculate the NPV, plus it looks like the chances of getting a job are really bad, so on the personal scale he should just start taking a job, even if that will set him back in pay over the rest of his life. How can you start to burden your friends with this problem, if you're not willing to solve it yourself?
