Primarily a result of conditioning, but then a big chunk of the placebo effect in humans is conditioning too. I'm certainly not going to lecture you in your own proverbial backyard, but I was under the impression animals with chronic conditions come to recognize their medicine as helping with it, especially painkillers, wouldn't that give some grounds for a limited placebo effect?
