Mages are now not very good at Direct Damage only time they are good at direct damage are using telekinesis (or are using huge amount of metamagic and metamagic reduction).

That said they are for while they can't do damage, they are the best debuffers, battlefield control (restricting the enemies actions so they can't hurt you), and are very good buffers. Wizards after level 7 or so are (as well as cleric and druid which are better buffers) are the best class in the game.

Think of your job not as doing damage, but on making your party awesome or making the enemy suck allowing your party to live long enough to be awesome. It is no different than the "healbot" in MMORPGs, or the "tanks"/"aggrostealers" in MMORPGs.

A good wizard can make almost any encounter a cakewalk.
