A fascinating thing, culture wars. Legolas Send a noteboard - 14/03/2010 04:16:35 PM
I read more detailed articles on this topic before, and I'll certainly be glad to see McLeroy go, but one can't really blame those people for wielding the power they were granted by voters in the culture war between left and right. I'd like to see some more moderate people on that panel, obviously - a near-majority of religious right members with an axe to grind isn't exactly a good thing if you ask me. But I can't really get outraged about it. The combination of strong nationalism and strong political polarization in the US makes it almost inevitable that there'd be this kind of fighting about how to view the national heroes and legends. Many places have similar conflicts between different views of history, but mostly based along some sort of ethnic lines, which in many cases means the various groups have to some degree their own education system. In the US it's just along political lines, so only one education system per state.
