What are the "noticeable difficulties" with having 17-year-olds on campus? Tim Send a noteboard - 15/03/2010 08:19:24 AM
These are fairly arbitrary things though, and easily adjustable, but it means that student who start with 5 by 1 sept are going to be 18 before their first semester of college begins, which is probably preferable for obvious reasons, having 17 year olds on campus represents some noticeable difficulties, which is a hassle alreayd for those who skip grades but widespread quantities of students doing their first semester as minors is probably better off avoided. So I'd say a fall cutoff date is probably the better alternative, at least in the states, especially since a lot of states are pushing for 18 as the driving age, saves a lot of potential headaches for what is otherwise a purely arbitrary system.

In this country, the problem is that they can't join in with Freshers' Week pub crawls and such like. But your drinking age is 21, so the one problem I can think of doesn't apply in the US (or rather, it applies to all college students). So what is the problem? Do you have to be 18 to register with a doctor by yourself or something like that?

Raising the driving age to 18 was nuts in Continental Europe, but it would be utterly crazy in the spread-out USA. Governments...

Given the nature of the people involved, I highly doubt they're willing to go to NOLA. - 14/03/2010 03:31:33 AM 207 Views

School years by birth year? That's far too logical and orderly for an English-speaking country! - 14/03/2010 11:10:27 PM 180 Views
It's pretty arbitrary, but you have to consider the ramifications at the college level - 15/03/2010 12:05:28 AM 185 Views
