Tactually? Adam will be insanely jealous.... Joel Send a noteboard - 13/04/2010 10:04:39 AM
I friggin hate turkish people that claim they are European, uhh sorry babe but no matter how much you bleach your and eyebrows it wont change what you are. I think it all boils down to an inferiority complex. but I say they should get an E for effort, they have changed so much about their culture to try to be more European like changing their alpahbet.Losers.

They have like 100 km of Europe, with none of the culture, language, or religion. Not to mention it spent most of the last 500 years as the seat of the Ottoman Empire, from which hundreds of invasions into Europe were launched, with the objective of conquering Europe and destroying Christianity. If Turkey is let in, we might as well let in Cambodia as well, it makes about as much sense.

I don't think every Muslim expansion into Europe was for the sake of destroying Christianity, mind, but certainly they set the stage for religious as well as ethnic conflicts that fester even now. I think of Turkey as a thoroughly Asian country, but not all Europeans see it that way, and being at the crossroads does give some legitimacy to the idea it's equal parts European and Asian while being wholly neither. But the fact remains that until/unless Turkeys government conducts itself as a 21st Century democratic state, or its people compel the government to do so, it really has no place among such states. Making Turkey an EU member while it continues to ignore rather than reform its past does nothing to alleviate the Balkan problem that arrived from there centuries ago, and a great deal to exacerbate it.

And Mahtaliel will probably remove your fingers with her Viking axe.

But, yeah, I wish it were as simple as superficial changes. Whether or not the Cold War is over and America the last superpower, there are fundamental cultural and societal differences between the Industrial World and the rest of it. Things like truly free elections and the rival political factions consisting of more than the repressive fundamentalist sector and the repressive military one. I don't really have a problem with "emerging democracies" joining the predominantly Western political and economic worlds. Really. I just don't think we should be so eager for it that we usher them in before they actually have EMERGED on the grounds that having all the benefits of democracy without any of the responsibilities will somehow magically induce them to accept the latter. It's kinda like when a HS kid wants his first car so mom and dad say, "OK, get a job and pay for the car, the gas and the insurance. " Paying all those things for them won't convince them to assume those responsibilities on their own, it'll just be "free car; AWESOME111" Meanwhile, mom and dad have to pay the consequences when they wrap it around a tree, drive their friends to every party in town and blow through stop signs.
