The main story arc isn't all that impressive. But, the point of Fallout 3 is that the mainstory is mostly what in already happened as much is what is currently happening. Little discoveries while searching to world, or computer logs, or audio recordings, odd little things in the ruins. All those things added up to create a compelling and captivating setting and interaction.
