From what I hear, it doesn't seem exactly sequel-y. If DA
rigins was truly an origin story or prequel, then it should've been named something else. Dragon Age: Shadows of Kirkwall?
I don't know enough about the story to give a good name.

Once you are keeping the name Dragon Age, its a sequel. Yeah, a title would have been a bit fancier, as opposed to just a number, but that's just a matter of preference.
Dragon Age 2 undeniably builds on the story of the first, though it does so by following a different character. The games seem to be showing the story of the Dragon Age... first showing the fighting of the First Blight, then the Awakening of the Darkspawn, and now the spark that starts a war between the Mages and the Templars. It's all very intimately connected.
I suspect it was due to pressure from EA, or possibly Bioware's own marketing experts. Basically the same reasoning that made Modern Warfare 2 retain the "Call of Duty" in the title. Despite a tiny part of me that legitimately argues that it keeps the branding, it's mostly there for moms to know which game they were nagged by their kids to buy.
Lots of people have said stuff like this, and I just don't buy it. The first Dragon Age was called "Origins" because one of its hooks was the various "Origin" stories you played out based on your characters background. Though that dynamic was dropped for 2, 2 was nonetheless a continuation of the story. Saying it was just a marketing ploy is pretty nonsensical.

They're neglecting the gamer demographic in DA2. Sexuality has nothing to do with it.
