I've been following Diablo III, but I've never heard of Torchlight.

For people not following this year's action-RPG games, those two titles are highly anticipated releases for later this year. Torchlight II is being made by the same people who made Diablo and Diablo II before leaving Blizzard to start their own companies, while Diablo III is a Blizzard game that brings in a whole new cast for the next installment in the highly popular franchise.
Torchlight II promises to be an "open" gaming experience, with mod support and release of the same development/design tools the designers used to create the game. The developers are promising a less-than-full-retail price of the game, which could be as low as the $20 initially required for Torchlight 1 in 2009. www.torchlight2game.com
Diablo III, on the other hand, is offering a closed, "secure" experience. Always-online even when playing solo, and no mods whatsoever. There will be an in-game currency auction hall for items as well as one for RMT auctions. Diablo III will be a full-price game for $60. www.diablo3.com
I'm looking forward to playing both games. I'm excited for Diablo III in many ways, but I admit that I find fault with requiring a peristent internet connection for what will largely be a single-player experience for me: my home connection is not always stable, and I don't cheat but am being punished for it anyways. And that doesn't even address the restriction of the used-game market (which is the real reason for requiring such DRM however much they're being truthful about game security).
Torchlight II, on the other hand, will likely run better on my system at max settings since it's using the same game engine as Torchlight (aka 3 years old). What's been promised as a lower price-point with no other barriers to entry is also very appealing to me. The availability of player-created mods has demonstrated time and again how it can vastly improve the base game by - ironically, Blizzard has incorporated dozens of what were 3rd party mods into the base WoW game.
I'm sure people have been following Diablo III, but has anyone else been keeping an eye on Torchlight II? Which are you more looking forwards to?
I'm REALLY looking forward to D3 even though-like you-I'll be playing it mostly as a single player experience and I hate the idea of always having to be online to play on my own.
Maybe I'll check out Torchlight sometime and see what it's like.
Kirk: Spock, you want to know something? Everybody’s human.
Spock: I find that remark…insulting.

Torchlight II and Diablo III.

Torchlight is a cheap, extremely undemanding (in terms of requirements), steampunk Diablo clone.

Agreed. Diablo (and Torchlight) is the very definition of a repetitive grindfest.

Yeah, the TW series is pretty weak grand strategy. Paradox does it best. *NM*

I dislike this "always-online" requirement, and I don't think I'll ever buy a game that demands it. *NM*
