Of course it has its downsides as well, but I admit that the game has grown on me a lot from playing it.
I was playing Empire last winter, so by then most of the bugs present at release had been cleaned up and gameplay was pretty smooth. I found it to be a much more involved game than M2 for all the reasons you went into above re: province development, naval warfare, colonies, diplomacy, etc. For example, I played a Short Campaign as Russia that was super fun; probably more than most of the time I'd spent playing M2 which I absolutely love.
Incidentally, have you ever actually gone to America in Medieval II? 'Cause I haven't, and have always wondered what it was like
.

No, I've never gone to America in M2. There never seemed to be much of a point to doing so for me, since (apparently) it took so many turns to get out there to have to start building new provinces up from jack scratch with the army I could be using to conquer mostly developed territories closer to home.

EDIT: Damnit, talking about Total War always makes me want to play it.
LOL, I know, right?!
Torchlight II and Diablo III.

I've been following Diablo III, but I've never heard of Torchlight.

Torchlight is a cheap, extremely undemanding (in terms of requirements), steampunk Diablo clone.

Agreed. Diablo (and Torchlight) is the very definition of a repetitive grindfest.

Yeah, the TW series is pretty weak grand strategy. Paradox does it best. *NM*

Diablo III's lore and atmosphere draw me, but not the bajillion clicks required.

I dislike this "always-online" requirement, and I don't think I'll ever buy a game that demands it. *NM*
