I think Bolt of the Heavens (or whatever the Paladin's ultimate magic ability is, it's been a while) has been patched since, but at the time I could fire it at Diablo without him even being on screen. I was out of range of most of his attacks (and could outrun the flame nova) so I just put on Meditation Aura and bolted him 'till he died.
The first rule of being a ninja is "do no harm". Unless you intend to do harm, then do lots of harm.
