It was the Christian imagery that turned me off, oddly enough

Not because of "blasphemy" or anything ridiculous like that, but more because I actually KNOW stuff about Christianity (and the actual Dante's Inferno), so seeing it in a distorted video game form was just very distracting.
Even though I'm only nominally a Catholic, functionally an atheist and secretly an agnostic, I still have a dozen years of various religious education drilled into my head. It's how I imagine Classics scholars felt when they watched the movie Troy.
Of course, all this makes me wonder how the Japanese do it- I feel like their religions and mythology are used in video games a lot more often. That doesn't feel weird to me, because either way it's just a foreign religion, but I wonder if it's a bit surreal for them?
So yeah, even though God of War is awesome, and therefore a clone isn't automatically BAD, in the demo just felt kind of ridiculous "redeeming" enemies, or shooting off blasts with my cross, or some weird thing involving (spoilers) my wife going to hell because I was an adulterer? Not quite clear on that, but that's what the demo made it seem like...... Even the scythe felt a little goofy.
Oh! And this is a minor nitpick, but if I recall correctly, the jumping was very akin to Devil May Cry- that is, you can jump really HIGH, but you never jump very FAR. That always felt really weird to me when I played DMC.
I dunno. The art was definitely cool looking, though.

This is why it's ironic that EA mocked the idea of Religious games, and used it as PR for the game.

I think it's that the game takes itself so seriously. I LOVE Jesus Christ: Vampire Hunter
