For people who see moderate Democrats - the kind of candidates required to win majorities in the House and Senate - as only barely distinguishable from Republicans, there's nothing illogical about what they are doing. And various conservative groups like to do the exact same thing on their side... my impression, though maybe I'm wrong, is that the Republicans have blown rather more winnable Senate and House races in recent years by picking too extreme a candidate in the primary, than Democrats have.
