I think that Sanders was basically set up to fail with WoT. First off, it wasn't his work....so there was that. Secondly, there was pretty much no way that it could live up to what we had expected. Much like saying a joke is super funny, but the reality can't live up to hype.
This is his own series. He built a world from scratch that is fun and unique. I say go for it.

Only read The Way of Kings. Interesting setting... kinda boring book that was 99% world setup.
