Big spoilers. Legolas Send a noteboard - 16/12/2017 12:55:05 AM

View original postI thought there was entirely to much time spent on side stories. It felt a lot like a reset. Almost everyone from the past is dead and the entire rebellion now fits in a conference room. The other problem is emo Vader is just not menacing enough and the other problem is he is still more interesting than Rea. They should try letting her show a few more emotions and maybe have a few more lines, I think the droid talked more.

I had probably more of an issue with the main story, to the extent there was one, than with the side stories. I didn't mind the casino escapade, for instance. But one of the two main arcs is really just 'rebels are chased by First Order', from the opening to the end - also in terms of in-game time, it's all set within a very short period of time. With really very little that interested me going on. Or that made sense.

The other main arc, Rey's plotline involving Luke and Kylo Ren, was a lot stronger, but still not exactly wow. Snoke proved himself to be a lot of big words but irrelevant when it came down to it, already forgotten two minutes after he's dead. Kylo Ren is indeed the most interesting character in the movie, and it potentially sets up a third movie in which he remains emotionally conflicted even while being the undisputed leader of the First Order / Dark Side forces, so that's better than it could've been.

If you compare the status of the story before the start of the movie and after its end, it's kind of remarkable how little has changed. Rey and Kylo Ren have developed and created a kind of connection, and Luke is now not merely absent but actually dead, as is Snoke. That's really about it, if you ignore unimportant minions or secondary characters. Now, it's traditional enough that the respective mentors on each side have to die at some point and let the young heroes step up as new leaders, but generally in a trilogy, the second installment does contain rather a lot more than that.

View original postI rank it fifth in series as far as likeability.

I'm inclined to rank it near the bottom, myself. The much-maligned prequel trilogy suffered from less likeable characters, you could say, and I don't mean just Jar-Jar, but it offered a lot more in terms of plot. And I'd also rank this below Force Awakens, which was also not that great but had more charm and variety at least.
