Even though we had 24/7 caregiver as a live in so he could remain in his house, he swore he was at a nursing home was furious with my brother and me for not taking him home. He also kept insisting he wanted his keys back so he could go out in his car long after we got rid of it.

Bottom line: sometimes they leave you no choice.
