Talking about Dogs and Cats > Sports > Weather.
[And I don't even like talking about sports ]
So what are other small-talk topics and their relational ranks against other small-talk topics?
Or at least anyone who makes the mistake of initiating small talk with me on the topic of sports tends to regret it. Might as well walk up to me and say "Egwene's actually the unsung hero of Wheel of Time."
OTOH, I loathe small talk, which when it is started by other people, I tend to translate as "Hi, I'm the fucking moron who failed to bring a book or learn to read before finding myself in a place with nothing to do, so I'm going to make that your problem, too."
I saw a really stupid movie where the main character is a writer who dumps Kathleen Turner in her prime for some scatter-brained hippy chick, but the one thing I liked was that he wrote a book about carrying a book on airplanes so your seat neighbors don't start talking to you. That was a more civilized age. There are people who appear to literally interpret taking out a book as a request for someone to initiate conversation.
As far as the weather goes, I agressively ignore weather reports, so I never have any information to offer and as far as weather goes, my favorite are overcast days, where there are no shadows except under the cars. I also like very cold days, so when people complain about that kind of weather, I just give them a look like they said they hate babies and say "This is my favorite season!"
Bringing up Korean cuisine is a good deflection if people start yammering about their undersized inbred household carnivores.
