Even involuntary commitment eventually ends. If they still want to do so then they will.

But for many people, suicide is the convergence of desire and opportunity. Having a loaded handgun in easy reach when you are at your lowest point is a dangerous combination. Studies have shown that as high as 9 out of 10 survivors of a suicide attempt never try it again. Since most suicide attempts by gun are not survived, it makes it especially important to try and somehow avoid this Venn diagram overlap.
