That World War 2 was a crisis that demanded common and united action against Hitler and the Nazis from Germans? Nothing in her statement says she's referring to past successes, just past challenges for Germany.

But she said the war, when most Germans were, to one degree or another, on the wrong side.
Unlike here in the US, I know for a fact that Germans are taught to reckon with the shame of their past in school.

Not sure what you mean by that. We are, in fact, taught that the Holocaust happened and was a bad thing. If you mean our own past, we're taught that, too. Excessively so, IMO. I'm about as 'meh' on slavery as you can get, and as objectively sympathetic to the principles of secession and the legitimacy of the Confederate cause as you are going to find who has never been farther South than Arlington VA, and I still taught my history class (in a private school, where I pretty much had free rein with the curriculum) that it was wrong, it was bullshit, it was immoral and that the excuses for justifying or defending slavery were illegitimate. Outside of Confederate lunatics or white supremacists, you are not going find someone less inclined to care about that stuff in the school system than I, but it's a part of the national narrative. I ripped into Jackson for the Indians, too, and I even covered the stuff down in Mexico & South America, and the conquistadors, in a Catholic school, no less. So I don't know what you mean by the insinuation that we in America are not taught to reckon with the shame of the actions committed by people of the same nationality, for whom no one living voted. If I was doing it, you can be damn sure the SJWs in the public school system were overloading the kids with the white guilt. As far as it goes, NJ outlawed slavery sixty years before the US did, had dozens of regiments with the Union Army, over 20,000 men in the Army of the Potomac and more than 5,000 men died to end slavery. Elsewhere. Why a bunch of kids largely descended from Irish, Italian, Hispanic and German immigrants need to learn about the wrongdoings of people their ancestors fought, or lived on the far side of the ocean from is beyond me.
Germany has laws against Holocaust denial,

Which are, in their own way, just as evil as the Holocaust itself. The Holocaust was simply a misapplication of a principle about what governments can do, i.e. kill people. Outlawing Holocaust denial is a violation of a natural human right of free speech.
and while this cannot be called that, I very much doubt Merkel, of all people, was making the case that Germans must put as much effort into stopping the Coronavirus as they did to win WWII.

Eh, IDK. It seems more like people are willing to give her more benefit of the doubt than they would Trump or Biden in a similar situation.
