Yeah I guess I don't think they're blameless, exactly. Just not where the real problem lies. People get pissed when they're told their security and rights are being taken away.
It matters whether what they believe is right or not, and in a democracy, it sure as hell matters who is feeding them the horseshit for their own profit.
