I'm not naïve concerning the current state of the electorate. I have the misfortune of knowing three people who absolutely believed in their hearts that "The Storm" was coming on Jan. 6th to sweep out of office the international child sex and infant blood drinking cabal and line them all up to be shot. All three blocked me on Facebook that day. I was disappointed. I had so enjoyed mocking them.
I'm glad they blocked you, rather than show their displeasure in more awful ways. I've heard of that happening here in Missouri.
What is the highest political office anyone from the Left espousing such views achieved? Genuinely curious to know that.
You seem to be shrinking the Trump base to make your point, and sure, there are plenty of Republicans who aren't in the "President Trump for life" camp.
But that's not what I'm talking about. Just look at the number of politicians, established as well as new, who have made an about-face on the events of Jan 6.
Same with masks and vaccine, resistance to both of which on political grounds maps very strongly to strong support for Trump.
These are people literally selling the lives of their constituents, and the health of their Constitution, to tap into a vocal minority that has taken over Republican primary politics.
I think we've only seen the first movements in the swing towards authoritarianism. And every vector on which you can track rising authoritarianism is worsening in America, so I don't see a swing in the other direction anytime soon.
