the country simply breaking into pieces peacefully, or doing the same not so peacefully. As you perhaps know, I happen to live in a country where breaking into pieces has been seriously considered for many decades now, with quite significant numbers of people in favour, depending on how you phrase the question - and yet, even the hard-core separatists get along much better with 'the other side' than Democrats and Republicans do with each other in the US. Though of course the problem is that you're not really a country of blue states and red states, which could be broken up relatively easily, but rather blue cities, red rural areas and mixed suburbs, all over the country...
