The lithium and even more so the cobalt needed to make solar batteries re environmentally destructive to mine. Lithium extraction uses an enormous amount of water in regions where there already isn't enough. And cobalt mining is a horror show.
Wind farms require hundreds of tons of concrete and cement production is already the second or third biggest contributor to carbon emissions. Plus they kill birds. Lots of birds.
Then there is recycling of solar panels. Currently only one state requires solar panel manufacturers to recycle the old ones when they are replaced. Much easier and cheaper to ship them to landfills in Asia and Africa.
Which is the real problem. The environmental damage done by solar and wind technologies is mostly confined to somewhere else. Not the back yard of the virtue signaling Tesla owner.
I think we need breakthrough tech for cheap, clean energy. Something new. Wind and solar are stopgap. We need better.
