The instant you fall into that trap you're dooming 20 other series to the same rules, namely:
- Every shot must look like the United Colors of Benetton
- Every, or nearly every, romantic relationship must be multiracial
- Strong characters must be women or BIPOC or LGBT
Excusing it is part of this late 1990s horror at "oh my God if I say this someone will call me racist!" when the reality is it isn't about racism at all; it's about the inartful shoehorning of race into every aspect of life, whether it belongs there or not.
Just step back from the PC line you're toeing and recognize that it does ruin the show on its own, and the other problems are just part of the larger problem, which is prioritizing other things at the expense of the source material.
