Though to be honest I'm not sure the IDF's word on it made much of a difference, given their equally obvious incentives to lie - it was the US weighing in, plus various independent sources analysing publicly available data more in depth, that swung opinion.

But the point was that news outlets in the West immediately took the word of the Gazans in accusing Israel. Now the narrative is that Israel has to show it didn't rather than the narrative starting with We Dont Know Who or How.
And of course this plays right into Hamas' propaganda aims since the Arab leaders with Biden were cancelled as a result.
I find it interesting, but sadly not a bit surprising...
