More 'it all depends' here. Legolas Send a noteboard - 11/03/2024 05:51:21 PM

View original post Even the rationale given is pathetic. To share with his bandwagon child? How about setting the proper example? True story: I am 100% Yankees/Giants/Knicks/Rangers. When my firstborn child began watching sports with me, he announced he would be a fan of the Mets/Jets. He maintained this for a while, but in time, once realizing it was not irritating me as he had hoped, he abandoned the dark side and returned to the light. I was confident this would be the end result. Why? Because he was raised right.

In fairness to the writer, your list of your teams is clearly geographically based - you picked your favourites from the New York-based teams, since you live near NYC. So what would you have done if, like in his case, one of those teams moved to another city, like say Boston? Or if you moved to Boston yourself?

For me personally, the teams I'm a fan of have never had much to do with geography - in fact most of them haven't even been in my own country, as foreign leagues tend to be rather higher level and more interesting. Even in my own country's soccer league, my hometown never had an even halfway decent team while I was growing up, so as a child I picked for rather arbitrary reasons one of the big three teams of Belgian soccer at that time to support. By now, my hometown actually does have a top tier team, whom I wish well and certainly would like to see win the league, just like the team I'd picked as a child. To the extent I still care about our national league at all, that is - the Premier League in England or La Liga in Spain are far more interesting.

And abroad, of course the teams I chose to support were generally ones that were doing well. Although sometimes other factors played a role - my favourite NBA team still remains the Phoenix Suns, largely because of the influence of Jessie on wotmania, who have been pretty good for most of my lifetime but only rarely an actual championship contender. But those have sometimes also changed under the circumstances. Like, in Germany, while I never followed the league closely, I long had sympathy for Bayern Munich - also partially because of Jens/ironclad. But at the moment Bayern has won the German league eleven (!) consecutive times and counting, so uh, yeah, Jens may love it but I'm rooting for literally anybody else to win it now.
