It reminds me of the late 90s, when Rudy Giuliani was an unabashed Yankees fan, and when the Subway Series finally happened (after interleague play had been around just long enough to take the novelty off), he didn't back down, even with half his city on the other side. Compared to Senate candidate Hilary Clinton who tried to claim "I like both." There were probably Democrat Met fans who respected Giuliani more for sticking to his guns and appreciated his honesty more than Clinton's pandering. Might explain why, on the same ballot, Al Gore won NY by 5 points more than she did.
I was at opening day at Yankee Stadium in 1995, as was Mayor Rudy with his son. He was right behind the Yankee dugout. We were a few sections closer to home plate. New York being New York, Rudy was subjected to heckling. There was a classic NY fan, with a voice you could hear multiple blocks away, who was a source of amusement the whole game. Right away he started on Rudy when he and his entourage arrived in the middle of the first inning.
"Mayor's kid doesn't have to go to school?"
Rudy's head whipped around as did the heads of his security people.
Then a few innings later, Rudy got up and was followed by one of his security aides.
"What, does he have to hold it for you?"
Rudy's head was bobbing around like a pigeon as he tried to locate the source. His security guy was looking around as well, but so many people were laughing they couldn't tell who was the perp.
It was pretty funny.
