Something along the lines of:

"Would you say your character is portrayed primarily as trying to do good things? Yes or no? Acceptable but unrequired answers would be Strong Yes, Mild Yes, or Highly Debateable"

The emphasis is on 'portrayed', 'primarily', and 'trying'

Examples for Strong Yes: Classic Comic Heroes and protagonists, again, you may just answer yes.

Examples of Mild Yes: Characters who aren't really active pursuers of good, etc, but will often be portrayed doing good at some sort of risk to themselves or other goals.

Examples of Highly Debatable: Characters who have rather non-traditional views on ethics, or who have bounced around from tragic villain or reformed villain to good guy, etc.

No: This person is either a bad guy or just appears primarily uninvolved with the struggle for good, like the heroes jaded drinking buddy, somewhat snappish but non-evil boss, the random bureaucrat or politician who interferes with the hero but without evil intent or vile corruption.

Okay, any holes in that? Better phrasing, different wording of the question or different available answers? Really want just yes or no but I'm trying to build in more specific leeway.
