After what appears to Xanthe to be an overlong and sadistic length of time, the cook, Anica, seems satisfied that the thief has understood her lesson, and after retrieving the apron Xanthe had stolen, she is kicked out by the back door - an exceptionally unpleasant sensation, given the tenderness of her behind at that moment - and warned that if she is ever seen at the Glowing Embers again, the Children of the Light will be called for.

Back in the common room, the Shadow's schemes are getting well under way. While Sammil has resumed his position near one of the hearths, the patrons do not seem as attentive as they previously were. Concentration seems lacking, and several commoners complain about the heat - despite this being after dark in the dead of winter. Most, whether complaining or not, seem to be sweating profusely. The Amadician soldiers, afraid to show anything that might be seen as weakness, pretend that there is nothing wrong, but they too are sweating, and they too are no longer greatly entertained by the gleeman's prowess. One of the soldiers drops his goblet, and with a frail laugh bends over to retrieve it with some obvious effort.

When Maravin leaves the group, his jug empty, some of the men wave at him weakly, and there are a few forced laughs, but nobody really pays him much further heed. Tian, obviously troubled and apparently about to start a fight, draws more attention, especially some worried glances from his soldiers, who are likely starting to feel much weaker right now. One of the soldiers, a man named Sebban, gets to his feet and walks over to his officer. It appears to be taking the man all his concentration merely to take one step after the other, and even this he does only with moderate success. "Bannerman, is there a problem?" he asks Tian.

Master Jaemin, like the few who did not accept Maravin's gift, also realises that something is amiss. He walks over from one guest to another, asking questions, and sends one of the maids to find the local hedge doctor.
The first rule of being a ninja is "do no harm". Unless you intend to do harm, then do lots of harm.
