A protagonist is good because it gives the movie direction. You don't HAVE to have one, but it helps. There are good movies without protagonists.
Qui-Gon did that. He moved things along at every turn. And yeah, I realize Qui-Gon is maybe the best candidate for a protagonist, but he's still... not really. He's not someone the audience identifies with,
I don't know why not. It wasn't explicit, but he's the guy on a routine side mission he already seems to be looking past, that turns a lot more interesting and leads to other discoveries, and whose supervisors doubt him and are constantly butting heads with him. He's kind of like the Harry Dresden of space. Although in his prime, rather than starting out. he doesn't have any character development...
No one does, aside from Obi-Wan's 180 on various issues at the very end.he's not a BAD character, I actually kind of like him, but I think he's much more of a mentor/Gandalf figure than a protagonist.
Just because his students dominate the rest of the story doesn't mean that's his role in this film. He really doesn't mentor anyone in this, beyond the occasional pro forma platitude dropped on Obi-Wan, whom he claims is ready to be a Jedi Knight. Obi-Wan's at the end of his apprenticeship andAnakin has not yet started his. The mentor role is in his past and potential future, not the story depicted in the film.
