Do you enjoy watching foreign movies? Animated or live-action?
Generally, I enjoy them more than most Hollywood movies. I like that you don't know how it is going to end. If it is a Hollywood movie, you know the HEA is on the way. As for live-action vs. animation, I'll happily watch either.
What are your all time favorites?
RAN is one of the greats. Roshamon is out there too. Pan's Labyrinth as mentioned above is good. Y tu Mama Tambien, Das Boot and Run Lola Run anyone? Delecetessen, Amelie, and too many others to mention also are fantastic.
Which cultures (nations) films do you find yourself most interested in?
French, Spanish, Chinese, Japanese, Indian, German. I don't know. I'll watch just about anything and like something about it.
Do you prefer dubs over original language, in live-action and/or animated?
Subtitles are the ONLY way to go with live action. With animated, I usually watch the dubbed version. The lips aren't going to match anyway so it doesn't matter.
How did you find yourself becoming interested in foreign films, (i.e. Audrey Tautou obsession, Asian horror obsession, general interest in foreign culture)?
All three of the reasons you listed helped me become a foreign film fan. Also, watching epic Japanese movies like RAN and MacArthur's Children and Das Boot in high school were always helpful too. Each foreign film is a different experience and always fun.
What 'hyped' foreign film has let you down upon viewing it (if any)?
None that I can think of. Maybe Life is Beautiful was not as amazing as I'd heard, but still excellent.
How do you feel about remakes, are there any that have been pulled off successfully?
Remakes are everywhere. The most consistent remake I can think of is Abre de los Ojos and Vanilla Sky. Almost line for line literal translation. Funny thing is that Panelope Cruz played the same role in both movies. The Seven Samurai and The Magnificent Seven were both great movies, although not nearly as faithful.
