It's sort of the tv version of a movie sequel. It's less risky to build on a successful franchise than it is to create from scratch. Sequels and reboots don't happen because we need them for whatever reason, they happen because they're profitable. 
But it's more than that, take the office, how many americans would get the whole "Slough" thing? Not many I imagine and I wouldn't expect them too. So you remake it.
