It's bugging me that nobody else in the thread has even seen the movie.
View original postIt's out in Ireland in the middle of November but I don't know if I'll have time to see it.
It does last three hours...
View original postI think it's also noteworthy that this is the first film based on a graphic novel or comic to win the Palme D'or, and as far as I only the second after History of Violence to even appear in competition at Cannes.
Yes, indeed. Maybe Persepolis, don't know if that appeared in competition. Checked now - it got the Jury Prize in 2007. But then it was an animated movie itself.
View original postI guess it says something about differing attitudes between French and English language film industries that a "comic book" film could even be considered for a top award. Yes, I know there's a substantial difference between this film and Avengers or Man of Steel, but there are plenty of top quality English language comics and graphic novels that have nothing to do with people in spandex or lycra hitting each other. Joe Sacco's Safe Haven Sarajevo or Palestine could make fantastic films.
I'd sooner say that it says something about the different attitudes towards "comic books". But I see no reason why a movie version of a non-superhero English language comics-inspired movie couldn't be in the running for an Oscar as well. For that matter, even some superhero movies do, just look at The Dark Knight.
It's just sad that so many English speaking people still think comics have to be either superhero stories or cartoons, or that's the mental association they make anyway.

No. "Puritan prudishness" characterizes much of America perfectly. Leave it in.

Either way though, it caused the thread to derail into quite unintended directions.

Either way, you guys, the point of my review was that this was more than just a sex movie.
