I didn't say she was wrong or that feminists are right, I just presented what their position'd be Cannoli Send a noteboard - 18/10/2009 12:11:25 AM
In the first place, Firefly has the fewest hours of running time of any of them. Being in its second season, Dollhouse has to have passed it up. I have long felt that the short run of Firefly (and given my way WOULD have allowed JW all the rope to hang himself as possible), might have been the best thing to happen to that show, as it kept the flaws from emerging. He's dead-on-balls-accurrate about Buffy in regard to the chick-power thing. He did state that Angel and Firefly were both male PoV, male-perspective shows, so presumably this attack on Whedon's alleged feminism would not have applied. There WAS, however, the episode where Wash felt threatened by Zoe's & Mal's history, and inveigled his way onto the mission with Mal, where they got kidnapped by Mr. Nishka, and then the rest of the episode was about Wash asserting his macho side, losing the Hawaiian shirts and going all commando-sleeveless-vest on the rescue mission, and having Zoe make him soup at the end before they go hop into bed together. So much for Zoe the mighty feminist icon. And when she comes to ransom Mal & Wash, and the crimelord tells her she can only have one back, she picks her husband over her war-time comrade-in-arms & commander, before Nishka can even get the words out. Whether you approve of the choice or not, it was hardly the choice of a writer who is trying to portray a woman taking the typical masculine role. So much for "bros before hos"...

I can't make any statements on the other shows, so I'm sure you've got valid points. But I think you're wrong about Zoe. 1) Taking Wash out of there is exactly what she knows her "Bro" would have ordered her to do. 2) She takes away some of Nishka's fun by doing it so quickly. 3) Wash was nearly done for, and Mal lasted a while longer. So to speak. If she had picked Mal, she would have broken Wash AND possibly made Nishka suspicious of a rescue attempt.

What I think Whedon did there with the soup was to show that she is first and foremost a bad ass and can choose to show a softer side if she feels it's necessary/wants to. Not that she's a marshmallow inside who's hiding it under an Amazonian facade. She also wants to have babies, but that's not because she goes all simpery and feels the womb a callin', it's because she's brave enough to want to have something even considering the type of life she leads.
