You know I never felt bad for the replicants throughout the whole film until Batty changes his mind, saves Deckard and gives his final speech. There you get the glimpse at what those replicants really were about and that they were much more than machines. Up until that scene they were rather one-dimensional (probably intentionally so) and I always felt they deserved to be hunted for being such a threat.

Maybe it's because I only ever saw the "Final Cut" and all, but I definitely felt for the replicants long before that. Even in the scene with Roy and Leon in the freezer with that Asian scientist, Roy is menacing yet not evil, and in a way almost childlike - he really seems precisely like what they say he is, a creature created as a powerful adult man who has to start from zero in experiencing emotions. Same with Pris and to a certain extent even Leon - Zhora doesn't really get enough screentime to show much development, and Rachael doesn't even realize she's a replicant, so obviously she seems much more human.
Interesting about the animals. I remember Zhora saying something like "would I be working in such a place if I could afford a real snake", or Deckard admiring the bird of prey at Tyrell's, all hinting at animals being pretty rare, probably mostly extinct at this point. Which always made me wonder if the animals we see in the crowded market street are real.

Fairly sure the answer is no - after all, that's in the very same street where that Egyptian guy makes his artificial snakes. The ones sold in the streets are bound to be artificial as well.
