If the Bore is like a Gateway... LoialT Send a noteboard - 25/06/2010 06:19:44 PM
Personally, I think it should be possible to Unravel the Bore, maybe with Callandor. Basically, the Bore is nothing else than a special, gigantic Gateway drilled with the OP through the Pattern to the DO. We also know from Demandred that one can only sense the Bore in the Pit of Doom, which implies that it is some kind of weave and explains why Rand has to enter the Pit.

If the Bore is such a special Gateway-weave, it should be possible to Unravel it like you can Unravel other weaves (of course this was unknown in the AoL, which explains LTT's failure and Moridin's horror about this discovery). Alviarin demonstrated this in PoD and might provide Rand with a clue. The seals have to vanish (clear the rubble before you can build), because they basically block that the Bore is affected from Randland (while the DO can gradually make the Bore larger, especially by weakening the Pattern through chaos).

It's also interesting that only LTT/Rand and Demandred are able to block a Gateway.

However, I also think that Rand's special blood might somehow literally play a part, because of the Prophecies and since we know that blood can have some effects in the Pit of Doom (e.g. in mindtrapping someone).

Then this also could explain why the forces of the Shadow have not done more to expand it. If they do something wrong then the whole thing could snap shut. And Shai'tan, the ultimate paranoid leader, would never let his minions take that risk. Or maybe at the beginning of the War of Power, when the DO's followers attempted to rip him free, they were using technology (ter'angreal) that was subsequently destroyed. Why else would they try to rip him free and then do nothing for 10 years? Maybe he was mad at them for taking that risk. Another question is whether their attempt actually accomplished anything.

Personally, I tend to agree with you Etzel, but with one addition. I think that the two most impossible OP feats of the series (unravelling and healing severing) will both play an important role at the end. I suppose Rand severing Asmodean from the DO's protection, his blocking a Gateway, and cleansing Saidin were also impossible feats that may play a role in the end (am I missing any other moments where AOLers had wtf reactions? Moridin was surprised at the a'dam, or "involuntary rings," right?) Even more than unravelling a weave, Nynaeve's miracle healing of severing seems to me to be truly unthinkable in AOL terms, and narratively much more than just the ability to heal a few stilled/gentled characters. Moreover, throughout the series, we have repeatedly heard that skilled Healers are also the most skilled at killing with the Power, and I think that whoever is most skilled at Healing severing would also be the most skilled at unravelling the conduit. It also just occurred to me that Semirhage was the other besides LTT/Demandred who could maybe block a Gateway according to Asmodean. That seems a bit odd to me, considering how her channeling talents are really much more specific than any of the other Forsaken. Her talents are also the closest Shadow parallel to Nynaeve's, so maybe it was a clue to Nynaeve's abilities as well? We were also recently introduced to the notion of unweaving when Nynaeve learned how to undo compulsion.

Now, it is possible that the Bore is part Gateway, part Power conduit and that knowledge of both unravelling and healing/damaging Power connections will be key to removing the Bore.

I am not sure, and I still feel that the ultimate solution may not really be OP-based, but I am certainly intrigued!
