There are billions of people on this planet that believe their entire life on earth is only important because there is an afterlife where every need is met and every desire is fulfilled, so I think it is pretty easy to understand how a culture like the Amayar could come to exist.


Jonestown is only one example of mass suicide, there must be many other similar situations throughout history and I would not be surprised if there had been various religions in the past with some kind of prophetic death pact involved!
