If Fain would really be the key to defeat the DO in the end, as some people believe, it would be too much remind of LotR. Of course, RJ said that Fain is a wildcard outside the structure of the story. That implies that Fain won't play a major part in the end.


He has certainly had a huge impact on the story so far, if perhaps only indirectly. If not for him, and his dagger in particular, Rand might not have discovered how to cleanse the Taint and may not have sunk to the depths that we saw over the last few books. I interpreted RJ's wildcard remark to mean that Fain/Mordeth adds a rogue element to the typical Dragon vs. DO conflict that has occurred in ages past.
